In the time when we get anxiety just by seeing the death toll of coronavirus patients, Dr. Kalpana is managing the burial and cremation of the deceased. Dr. Kalpana Baliwant is an assistant medical officer in Pune Municipal Corporation(PMC). She earned her MBBS degree from Mumbai and completed a post-graduate from BJ Medical College in Pune. She has been working with PMC for the past 27 years and heads the birth and Death registration department.
Till 29 April, the Pune death toll stands at 85 with 143 new coronavirus cases taking the tally to 1,491.
Initially, she faced a problem as the family members and relatives were not coming forward to take charge of the dead body. Civic staff was also reluctant in performing the final rites. PMC has now tied up with two Muslim organizations, whose volunteers are helping PMC in performing the final rites. After the outbreak, she is never off her duty. Even after the office hours, she personally coordinates with the ambulance, the staff at the crematorium, and the doctors and ensures that the burial or cremation happened properly. She is also responsible for supervising the final rites of orphans and those of unclaimed or identified dead bodies. She introduced an online platform where family members could get the death certificates of the deceased through emails rather than physically going to the PMC office.
We salute lead kindness hero Dr Kalpana Baliwant
