For the past two weeks, people in villages and outskirts of Santiniketan and Bolpur town in Bengal Birbhum district are receiving food items at the doorstep in the night. This work is being carried out by Shyamal Maji along with his students.
Maji is 36 yr old and runs a coaching center in color since 2006. The center provides coaching on subjects Bengali language, history, and political science to higher secondary and undergraduate students. He has a supportive wife and a four-year-old daughter in his family.
Students provide funds to buy the ration as well as distribute them. Each packet contains 2 kg since, a few vegetables, cooking oil, salt, puffed rice, and soap. In the daytime, his team marks the areas they would cover at night. Unlike others who click photos of such acts, he left the ration at the doorstep. He does this because he doesn't want fame and just wants to help them. The team reaches out to at least 10 houses every day.
